pushy wedding videographer

Posted by sgordon on 07/25/06 15:02

I just went to a friend's wedding, and was so appalled by the
videographer that I had to ask how common is what I saw.
It was as if the videographer (actually it was a team of two)
was trying to make a feature film... telling everyone look this
way, say this then pause 5 seconds, move over here so I can get
a good shot. And he had this huge flood light that he was
always moving around, even to the middle of the dance floor.
Whenever the bride and groom did something (like cut the cake,
say a toast, etc.), you couldn't actually see them, because there
were two videographers and a cameraman between them and the guests.
The gall! I kept expecting him to yell "cut!". The bride and groom
didn't seem to mind (so I didn't say anything), but I don't know if
that's because they wanted it that way, or were too preoccupied to notice.

What angered me the most, was that the videographer kept telling
people: "this is just 5 minutes, but THIS <pointing to his camera>
is for years." The arrogance of thinking that the actual wedding
pales in comparison to his "production"!

Anyhow, I'm a lurker here, and after the experience was curious
to know what you folks thought about it. Is this common today?
Am I just behind the times?

Scott
