It is an incredible value for the money. I would say Hash AM's strength
is in character creation, but converting or exporting it's output into
some other broadcast type application like Lightwave, Maya, or Max can
be problematical. But maybe it's gotten better that that since I saw it
last.
Other packages you might want to look at would include Blender, which
is free and also multiplatform. Free copy on CD in this month's 3Dworld
magazine.
It is useful for an animator to play with any number of programs to
find the one that feels most comfortable to them. Most offer a free
demo version to try, that is save-disabled or watermarked. They all
have different stregths.
Your choice will also be colored by what kind of work you want to do
most. I'm a lightwave fan myself, but that's because It is pretty good
for broadcast TV work, particularly mechanical stuff like spinning
logos and objects, but it can do so much more. Max got it's start and
big develpment push from gamers, but has evolved a lot. Poser is
something I find very useful for quickly putting people into scenes and
animating them quickly but realistically.
