I have a hacked Sony DVD player. I bought it from the (American) store that
way, with a better warranty than if I had bought the same un-modified
player from Sony itself. They had all the major brands - Panasonic, Phillips,
Sony, etc.
Oh yes, I know there are also high end brands, like Camelot. A friend of
mine has one of their earlier models. It also was created to defeat
region coding. After all, people really interested in movies aren't just
going to be satisified with the what's available at the local Tower
Records.
I don't expect anything to be different with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. If
anything, it's going to be the AV-philes who are going to DEMAND such mods
- especially since they're the ones who have potentially been screwed by
the industry and its ever-changing DRM requirements.
