"HDMI not supported" flashes on the screen for a few seconds. I think
you can turn off on-screen messages, but once you switch the player off,
it forgets, so you're back to square one again.

No, DVDs too, not sure about DIVX, and every time the audio changes, or
is interrupted, when you're in the menu and go to another part, play the
DVD or scene select extra features, you get it, even when there's a
layer change. It's annoying, but you get used to it. No reason they
couldn't have fixed it though, if they had wanted to.

Don't know for sure, but I would imagine so. I think they are the same
player minus DVD-A/ SACD.

Mine is connected HDMI to plasma and optical cable to my amp. The 950
also has the six phono connectors, not sure if the 850 has them though.
