I would never fully trust a cd/dvd backup. You really need multiple backups
on various formats/platforms to be sure.

But, it could be that your pc's dvdrom drive has issues with these discs
(even if this was the same drive that burnt them). Another drive on another
computer might be able to read them fine.
Try as many different machines as you can.

Another problem could be the way they were burnt in the first place -if not
done properly, the backups aren't really backups anyway.

Also, try cleaning them, but rubbing (hard) with a lint-free cloth from
centre out to the rim -all the way around.
