I'm in Denmark, so it might be a European issue. I thought it was
global, though. Incidentally, try finding a copy protected audio CD and
look for the CD Digital Audio label. I haven't found any with both.

Interesting, and thanks. However, the main issue is the failure to read
files directly from the media in a computer.
What I see is, that the drive itself reports failure on such attempts,
leading me to believe that there is some sort of protection involved
that deals with the low-level access to the medium. I have been unable
to find any info on this protection scheme, though I have since found
ways to play back the movie (thanks Malcolm. Totem works too).
I still doubt very much that this protection scheme is part of the
specification, as it is nowhere to be found in the sources I have found
(the link above seems quite thorough), and would thus like to make a
complaint to the relevant authorities, however, I would like some sort
of confirmation that it is indeed unspecified.
