i'm based in australia, and though i haven't travelled the region
extensively myself, i have edit quite a number of 'doco's', travelogues,
etc., for clients, big and small.
the general consensus seems to be to take your own equipment - at every
level, ie. dv thru 35mm. the argument goes, you're only there the once,
you can't depend on hired equipment (if there is any available), and the
hassles involved with; surety, support, and collection / return usually
far exceed the benefits....
