I write this post so that others with similar problem will be able tofind a resolution:

I have a NEC 3550A DVD player/burner. When I play movies on it, the
drive sounds very loud, almost like a jet engine. To make the drive
silent during movie playback you can download a program called
 NeroDriveSpeed:

 http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=download.html

If this link is not active then do a Google search for it. It is free.
Not sure if you have to have Nero concurrently installed (I do). Open
this program and choose your dvd player. Then you can either click the
"Silent" option or manually adjust the speed to 1X. Then hit "Close".
Your DVD player will now be very silent, and you can enjoy your movies
hearing only the movie and not the dvd player!
