You did not give the version of your Nero software, 6.3 or below is
okay, 6.6 (the upgrade) and 7 suck. From my experience with Sonic
software, you might as well erase it, like I did when it came
pre-loaded. Sonic is Trash.
The free software you can use to make DVDRs includes DVDShrink (to
create Video.TS files stored in a folder you create on your desktop;
the Audio.TS file it creates is blank), ImgToolBurn to create an ISO
image file and the ever reliable DVDDecrypter to burn any ISO files
onto a DVDR.

Avoid spending any money on burning software, most software is not
worth the money.
If the DVDRs you make are not compliant with DVD requirements,
something you are doing is wrong. Some players, like some Sony DVD
players, will only play DVD-R discs.
