According to some experts, including Senate committee members
responsible for transport safety in Canada, the new regulations are
there to make passengers feel like the government is doing something
useful. Tens of thousands of airline and airport workers are still able
to put whatever they want onto a plane with absolutely minimal, if any,
security checks. It's like the heat-detecting body scanners during the
SARS crisis.
But passengers go home and say, "Gosh honey-- I feel a lot safer flying
now because the government took my hair gel..."
When a government spokesman announced that they had known about this
type of plot for ten years, a reporter asked why, then, the new
regulations were only imposed in last few days, the spokesman was at a
complete loss.
You might or might not actually be safer, but let's be prudent about
assessing the effectiveness of the government's response.
