Of course you need to figure out how much you want to overexpose the
background, or if you want to overexpose it at all.
The reason the gel looks so orange, is because it is a colour-correcting
gel as well. It corrects the blueish daylight to tungsten to match it with
the studio's light. It is called CTO or as in photography 85Nx where x
denotes the amount of stops it cuts in light (in multiples of 3).
