I would like do the following:
Copy VHS tapes to DVD
---------------------
I have some VHS tapes I would like to copy onto DVD media (so I can get
rid of the tapes). Some of them have just a half hour worth of material
on them; I would like to be able to copy multiple tapes to each DVD. It
would be useful to be able to create a basic DVD menu which I could use
to skip to the section/chapter I want when I am viewing the DVD.
I do not know what kind of copy protection the tapes have. If there are
DVD recorders that are better than others at bypassing copy protection,
one of those is preferable.
Record cable TV programs
------------------------
Program the timings of the programs into the DVD recorder and have it
record them off of the appropriate cable channel. I would like to use
thi capability in the following two modes:
1. Record programs while I am away from home or asleep
2. Record programming from one channel while I am watching another
I will be using this feature infrequently and don't care if the programs
are recorded to a hard drive or a DVD.
Record from camcorder or DVD
----------------------------
I am assuming that most if not all DVD recorders would allow me to copy
home movies either from a camcorder or a DVD player.
A very useful feature (if available) would be the ability to copy
portions of a movie, like specific scenes, from the source DVD to the
target DVD.
Other information that might be useful
--------------------------------------
- I prefer spending less and getting slightly older technology than
paying a lot more on the latest stuff
- I do not currently have HD TV and am also not interested in Blu-Ray
since its quite expensive at present
- It would be useful (but not necessary) if the DVD recorder supported
common media formats like +R/+RW/-R/-RW etc.
- I have no preference on the SD card slot available on the newer
players
