The tape isn't really held against the heads unless the
camcorder is powered on and the motors are holding
it in tension. As long as you don't power-down the
camcorder while the tape is moving (recording or
playing) then it is quite likely safe enough as the
pinch roller is released from the capstan and the
tape is slacked away from the head drum.
The major possible problem is that the ~2 inches of
tape that is out of the cassette shell is not held in
place by the winding pack may become unreliable
(because of cupping or some other effect of
differential ambient conditions like drying, etc.)
But this just means that 1~2 seconds of video may
have a temporary anomoly. Not a particularly big
deal IMO. We always leave 5-10 seconds of tape
rolling on either end of a shot anyway, right?
Note that some battery types are more prone to self-
discharge than others. I wouldn't rely on any that
were just installed for some period of time without
regular recharging or at least monitoring. I always
try to have two batteries and alternate them one in
the charger and one in the equipment.
