True, DVCAM is a viable format.
But I have had problems with mini dv in the past, wrinkles, dropouts,
etc. No matter WHAT brand of tape or where I purchased it from. I was
told long ago, that whatever brand tape you start to shoot in your mini
dv camera, you should stick with. IMHO it holds true.
Which leads me to my previous statement: Given a choice most producers
would rather have a show shot on a format that can handle extreme
conditions, and is proven...I worked for National Geogrpahic TV myself,
and the show I shot was on DVCPRO with the Panasonic Varicam, we used a
DVX 100a for a "crash camera" on a show about M1 tanks. I agree,
smaller cameras have their place, but the majority of the reality
programming you are viewing is shot on a larger format tape. One recent
job comes to mind where the producer/director preferred XDCam because
of the higher quality it offers when it comes to the streaming issues
of web based video.
