try visiting the fullcompass site; you'll get a better idea of the
kinds of mics and how to use them. That said, try this first: get a
line-out or mic-level out from the band's audio mixer board into your
camcorder thru a simple cable from radio shack. Set your camera's
incoming audio impedance control to match mic or line level. If you
don't have a control for that, put a mixer between the cable and the
camcorder or an adjustable attenuator, again, from radio shack or
fullcompass, which sell the Shure brand. Once the incoming level is
properly matched, your camera will get the same sound as the people in
the venue, just minus the crown noise, reverb off the walls, that sort
of thing. Adding a little bit from the second channel's worth of input
from the on-board shotgun can help fatten up that mix and make it more
"alive" sounding. just watch out for a fractional delay between the two
channels that will sound like an echo. If you move one track forward or
back just a little on your timeline, they should match up better.
If you can't plug into the mier board at the show, get a rugged omni
dynamic mic like the SM57 or Electrovoice, add your own attenuator or
mixer to that to control the level, and get busy.
