Wouldn't have thought so. I have a 575 which improves on the 444 specs by
having SACD and DVD-Audio compatibility, a 12-bit video DAC (444 has a
10-bit DAC) and looking at an old review online, it lists the 444's format
compatibility as: DVD/DVD-R/DVD-RW/CD/CD-R/CD-RW/VCD/MP3 playback. The 575
also adds DVD+R/RW, DIVX, MPG, JPG, WMA and (I've heard but not tried it
myself) OGG audio.
The 575 also has 5.1 phono outputs, mainly for the DVD-Audio and SACD
playback, but also has built in DD and DTS decoders. And the 656 improves
further still by having 2 Scarts. The 444 was a good player in its day but
technology moves on.
