If you're looking at recording stuff just to watch and wipe (I assume you'll
use the DVD recorder to record things permanently), don't get a VCR, get
hard drive based Freeview PVR. You can get excellent single tuner 80Gb
(approx 44hrs) models for under 100. They're far simpler to use, better
quality and more functional than a VCR.
I have the FVRT90 which is a fabulous little machine:

You get a seven day EPG. To record something you just find it in the EPG,
press the record button and you're done. It has options to set the same slot
to record every day/week/etc. It can simultaneously record a programme while
playing back something already recorded (try finding a VCR that will do
that) and automatically buffers up to two hours of the channel it's tuned
to, which in effect means you have instant pause and rewind of live TV, plus
up to two hours retrospective recording if you decide you want to record
something when it's already halfway through.
Connectivity wise it has two Scarts, analogue stereo and optical audio
outputs, and can output RGB and S-Video as well as composite. Other handy
little features are things like the ability to record the subtitle stream so
subs can be optionally switched on on playback, 48x fast forward/rewind and
a configurable skip button which is great for jumping adverts. Oh, and
there's also the fact the recorded content playback is the same quality as
broadcast TV.
You can also get twin tuner models and ones with bigger hard drives, but the
FVRT90 does me fine and I honestly can't imagine going back to tapes now.
