With a Pioneer DVR, during the setup procedure you specify your ZIP or
postal code. From there on the DVR should start to receive program
listings. When I got the recorder in January the name of my cable supplier
would appear for me to verify. That has changed and I now just get an echo
of the postal code I entered, asking me if that was correct.
The TV Guide on Screen is a great thing when it works. Most problems are
caused by foul ups by the senders of program data. It's kind of a "black
box" system and the sender doesn't know if it's working or not, they just
perform a paid service for Gemstar, the originators of the listings.
