I have the same opinion of DVD recorders that I have of cauliflower -
I've never tried it, but I know I won't like it!
For on-the-fly MPEG2 capture (at DVD compliant or better bit rates) I
use Hauppauge capture devices into a PC. If you prefer even better
quality, check out an appropriate Canopus "capture" device. Canopus
offers DV capture as well as real time MPEG2/4 capture. Their prices
are commensurate with their quality.
Consider too using a player that is not stuck in first generation DVD
specs. Beside a PC, which is certainly avant-garde, there are many
DVD players that will also support higher bit-rate MPEGISO files,
higher bit-rate MPEG4ish files, and the burgeoning H264ish specs.
BEST? The eye of the beholder, eh?
