Best DVD/HDD Recorder For Me?

Posted by LB on 09/20/06 05:22

I am finally going to get rid of my VCR and get a HDD recorder. The
DVD option is a bonus because then I can record some stuff on the hard
drive and then burn it to DVD to watch in another room if need be.

These are my 'must have' features:

1. Tape many hours of TV and have it stored on a hard drive and easily
accessed.
2. Be able to copy shows from the hard drive to DVD for viewing
elsewhere.
3. Be able to tape shows from my cable-company digital box (movie
channels, PPV, & VOD).
4. Be able to connect my VCR to the DVD recorder to copy my old VHS
tapes to DVD (and get rid of that MASSIVE VHS collection!).
5. Connect my digital camcorder to copy my home movies onto the hard
drive.

Would be nice, but not necessary:

1. Tape one show while I watch another (or record two shows at once),
but don't think I can do that without getting a dual-tuner HDD recorder
integrated with my cable box from my cable provider or Tivo - correct?
2. One touch recording
3. Pause live TV and resume later.

High-Def is not an issue, because I will just be recording digital TV
(no high-def channels, though).

I've heard LG machines are a waste of time, because they won't record
any movie channels, pay-per-view and VOD. Correct?

This machine seems to meet most of my needs - Pioneer 160GB HDD/DVD
DVR640HS. Although it doesn't have a firewire port for my digital
camcorder (like my PC does), I can still connect my camcorder with the
USB port, can't I? And, how can I connect my VCR to this recorder (AV
jacks?).

Thanks in advance for your advice!
