Beware Sharp DV-RW550U

I bought one of these from Circuit City in December of '05 and it gave me
good service until the first of September. Then, out of the blue, while
finalizing a disk, it just got hung in the cycle and wouldn't ever finish. I
left it alone for about an hour (it usually takes about 3 minutes) and then
tried to shut it off. Nothing worked so I unplugged it for about 10 seconds.
When I plugged it back up, it would power on for about 5 seconds and then
shut off. Could not eject the disk, could not do anything. I called
1-800-BE-SHARP and found a couple of service centers in the Mobile, Alabama
area.

Here's my gripe; one of the centers told me that any Sharp DVD Recorder had
to go back to the factory for service. I took it to the other one and they
said that they would fix it, but it would take them about 2 weeks to look at
it. Yesterday I called them (it had been 3 weeks) and they said that they
couldn't repair it and that it would have to be sent back to the factory for
them to repair. ??? Now I have to pay shipping there and back for the unit
to be looked at.

I don't understand why a place that is a "Factory Authorized" service
center cannot fix something from the manufacturer that "Factory Authorize"s
them. At the least, since it was still under the 1 year parts warranty, they
should have been the one to have to send it to the factory and pay for the
shipping.

Warranties don't mean much anymore and it seems the phrase "Factory
Authorized Service Center" doesn't either.
