Hi Geoff
Yes DVD players and also computer DVD drives have separate lasers for
the different wavelengths of laser light needed to burn and read the 2
different types of disk. It need not necessarily be a laser diode
itself which is faulty, there could be a fault with the associated
circuitry, but, yes there are sufficiently separate arrangements for
CDs and DVDs that what you describe is a perfectly plausible failure
mode .
