Consultants.
A few years ago my workplace was visited by a consultancy group who
supposedly specialised in engineering environments. The management paid
them a lot of money. And I mean A LOT.
At the time one of our test rigs had a particularly large number of
cables leading to, from and across it including mains, heavily shielded
semi-rigid microwave RF and 400V three-phase power supply cables. One of
the consultants looked me right in the eye and with a straight face told
me we could tidy up the working environment by replacing all of the
messy cables with "some of those new Bluetooth connections".
If that guy has bought himself an HD TV, I'll bet that he has a £1200
HDMI cable to go with it. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Unless you get into consulting, then it's a way of putting your kids
through university.
