On a pressed disc, no fucking way!

Actually, the plastic gets stamped with said pits, and IT is what
gets metallized, so it isn't an "aluminum substrate" at all. It is a
metallic deposition on top of already existing pits. That deposition
then gets coated with a top coat, and the reflectivity of the
deposited Al causes the pits which were stamped into THE PLASTIC to
provide a varying light encoding to the disc reader's pickup.

The plastic surface on the READ side of ANY recordable disc is
farther away from the written data than the "top" side of the disc.

A simple scratch on the top side will render a disc unreadable, but
several thousands of scratches on the bottom does not (necessarily).

Recordable discs are even worse for this problem.
