Most PC with built in video port are often output only and won't work
for capturing videos. Check the doc that came with your laptop and
see if there's a video capture feature.
If not, there's 2 choices. Since you have a laptop, getting a video
capture device is probably not practical since it tended to be CPU
hog, disk space hog, and a pain in the ass for less experienced
computer user to make it work. This method is cheaper than other by a
long shot. About $50 to $100 for the device if you already have hard
drive space to deal with raw video.
Other method, the easiest way but costs more ($300 to $600) is to get
a DVD recorder. Hook the VCR to DVD recorder, record the tape to DVD,
viola you have DVD. You can rip DVD afterward on your laptop to edit
out unwanted scenes, remaster a new version with menu and the works
and make a final version on DVD.
www.videohelp.com has many tutorials and links to shareware and free
programs you can use for mastering the DVD and menus. Plus a forum
there if you have a problem somewhere.
