The best-looking solution I've seen is a panel of
chipboard/fibreboard/flakeboard a little less than the width of the TV,
mounted on battens using magnetic fixings, reaching down to the skirting
board and decorated to match the wall that it's covering. Almost
unnoticeable, and not unattractive even if you do see the join...
You could use MDF, but the extra weight would probably make it necessary to
use dowels to fix it, rather than magnets.
