Listen, kid, what you're describing is NOT POSSIBLE in the DVD spec. A
picture can't be both full-screen 4:3 and pillarboxed 16:9 at the same
time. There is no accomodation for that in the format.
What is possible is that your DVD player has a function that will
automatically scale 4:3 pictures down to "pillarbox" size when you set
it for a 16:9 TV. It may not do this on every disc, because the disc
content has to be properly flagged as 4:3 in shape, and many studios are
lazy about getting the flagging right on bonus features. Nonetheless,
this pillarboxing is a function of your DVD player, not the disc.
Why don't you tell us what DVD player you're using?
I'm not trying to be argumentative. I'm trying to help you out here. If
I just wanted to be a jerk, would I have bothered to write that long and
detailed explanation of how DVD aspect ratios work just for your
benefit?
