OK, I'm going to jump in on this.
1 - anyone who wants to cheat and pretend they are a student can get
products at student prices. It's not against the law. But you are also
not really a student. I guess it's an ethical issue.
We run into people trying to scam there way into student discounts all
the time. We do our best to weed out the real students from the
pretend ones. Unfortunatley Apple and many other companies do not
really give a damn about this. It makes it very hard to be a dealer of
these products, but heck, if that was the only thing hard about being
a video editing reseller.....
2 - Pro Video reseller. What the heck is that? I'll tell you what it
is. It's a dealer who specializes in configuring and SUPPORTING non
linear editing systems. Is this important - not at all - until you
need the support. Then it is EVERYTHING! When it comes to upgrading
your hardware, or a software upgrade that requires other upgrades
(hardware or software). you'll be really glad you have an expert
dealer to help you out.
Video editors usually have deadlines. It is great having a
knowledgable, helpful dealer you can call and count on for support.
If you buy the student version and something goes wrong - have fun
waiting for and getting support from Apple. A little extra investment
up front for expert support - you make the call.
3- $5,000 bucks. For a top notch HDV editing solution. No problem on
a PC. You can build (or have built for you) a lightning fast
dual-core Intel or AMD computer for under $2,500. Just look at the
machines we've spec'ed out in our DIY4 article
http://www.videoguys.com/DIY4.html and our upcoming DIY5 -Conroe
system.
Add in the right graphics card - see our DIY graphics article
http://www.videoguys.com/DIY-GPU.html and you are ready for editing.
A dual dual-core solution is going to put the system at closer to $4K,
but it is not required for HDV editing. Of course, the more horsepower
you have, the easier and smoother the workflow will be.
Just add the editing software of your choice. Any of these will do the
job for you:
- Sony Vegas7+DVD $499.95
- Avid Liquid $499.95 (949.95 for the Liquid Pro version w/ break out
box)
- Adobe Production Studio Std w/ Cineform Aspect HD $1599
- Matrox RT.X2 w/ Premeire Pro $1999 (we'll be pushing the $5K budget
here)
- Avid Xpress Pro $1495 ($1795 w/ Mojo after rebate)
- Canopus Edius $599.95 although I feel the other NLE's mentioned here
offer more features and performance for the money.
You can build the stuff yourself or have it built for you. Either way
you're under $5K and you've got a great NLE solution. If you decide to
build it yourself, we give you free tech support to help you get it
integrated and up and running. We've also got a ton of info on our
website to help you make the best choice and to optimize your computer
for NLE. http://www.videoguys.com/
4 - You can get a fully configured Mac w/ Final Cut Studio for under
$5K from any Apple Pro Video Reseller. It may not be the fastest
possible, but it will edit HDV and give you the performance you need
for editing HDV.
