This is sort of a ghost argument. I never said "pay retail and like
it" - what I said was a GOOD value-added reseller should be able to put
together a system at a comparable price (and that was really also
including upgrades, which we didn't specifically address in the $5000)
if not a price that was exactly the same or less. I definitely see the
value of having a knowledgeable VAR put together the system for the
extra measure of support and the time I would save not ordering from
multiple vendors or signing up for a course to make myself a "student."
So it was never really about $1300 - in any event it would have been
less - in this case we would have done a "meet comp" to get closer to
Apple's education pricing but we can't always do that. There is value
in what we and guys like Gary do and if the enduser doesn't see that
sometimes we have to walk away.

I have many examples of times when we have helped an enduser or a
dealer has helped me with a product. I remember well the recent issues
with Seagate 500gb hard drives not being recognized by G5s. We had a
number of calls from people who had bought them on their own and were
not familiar with the problem. Because we had already encountered the
problem early on, those who bought systems with upgraded hard drives
from us got a different kind of drive or Seagates that had already been
back to the manufacturer to have the problems rectified.

The fact that advanced video technology has become relatively
inexpensive makes it more available to the masses. That does not
equate to everyone buying a system knowing the ins and outs. I learned
fairly early on even with employees that guys who are editors don't
necessarily know anything about computers. That is not always the case
but it most definitely is at times. Of course it is an individual
choice on how you buy and we have to make our case to be the vendor of
choice like anyone else...but there is little to be gained by going the
education route IMHO.
