Nowhere have I suggested this. However the introduction of any new
broadcast service inevitably results in new and old systems having to
run in parallel for many years, perhaps many decades. There is no
magical way of funding such a thing so that new programmes can be made
exclusively for owners of the new equipment and denied to anyone still
watching on old equipment, and it is inconceivable that the hundred
years or so of existing material will cease to be of any interest to
anyone overnight. It is therefore a requirement that old material can
be shown on new equipment and vice versa, probably for several
generations, and the new equipment will have to be able to cope with
all the material that has been accumulated on all the old film and
television formats, probably forever, so technical specificatioins for
any new system must take this into account.
