Since all of my experience in this area is ABC NBC and CNN, I can't
speak for CBS.
I first started freelancing for NBC back in 1978. Followed by ABC and
CNN in 1990.
So much for my background......

To be on the "call" list with any kind of a reasonable chance of being
called, you must have the equipment specified by the particular
networks you choose to work with. And I have that list right here.
It's pretty simple.
1 BetaCam SP format (NOT Digi-Beta) camera with clearscan. (Sony or
Ikegami)
1 14X lens.
1 wide angle lens or lens adapter.
12 (twelve) hours of battery power.
1 power supply for the camera.
1 playback deck or playback adapter.
1 8" color field monitor.
1 fluid head tripod (Sachtler 18 equiv or better)
1 tungsten light kit with at least four lights being 600w or and at
least two soft boxes.
Immediate access to two HMI lights 200w minimum.
1 sungun.
1 three in- two out audio field mixer or better. (Must be battery
powered and portable.
At least two professional level wireless mics.
1 shotgun mic, zeppelin and fishpole.
2 hard wired lav mics.
1 headset.
1 production vehicle
1 cell phone.
You must join NABET-CWA by the time you have paid for working twenty
days. (that could take at least a year.)
To work on "A" list projects it is expected that the crew will have at
LEAST two HMI lights, a matte box with a professional assortment of
filters (Pro-mist, Black Pro-mist, Soft FX, 812, Pol, etc.......) two
more wireless mics. A lip mic. Spare monitor. Dedo lights, or at least
the pattern projector. A 3000 watt DC to AC power inverter. C-stands.
Flags. A 6x6 ScrimJim or two. Reflectors and walkie talkies.

No... you won't get called on any kind of a regular basis if you just
have a JVC GY-HD110U or Panasonic HVX-200. They are considered back up
cameras. The list is very specific. You will NOT get called again if
you show up without a BetacamSP format Camera.
However, if you happen to have captured a national newsworthy event on
ANY format, it will be bought.
But that is not the same as being called and booked on a regular
basis.

This is a bad time to be buying a camera. XDCam is most likely going
to be the format of choice in the coming years. But it is sorta still
up in the air as far as HD or SD right now.
