"HD" in video means "High Definition". What you mean is "HDD" for
"Hard Disk Drive".
You might want to take a look at the Polaroid DRM-2001G at WalMart for
$219. You get a 90-day no questions asked evaluation period. I have
one and I like it thus far. There are a couple quirks but I have
learned to live with them.
Actually the unit is quite advanced compared to last year's offering.
For example, I can play either the HDD or a DVD when I am recording to
the HDD. I can play the HDD when I am recording to a DVD.
The unit plays DivX/XviD/AVIs. The only problem is that it won't play
DVD-based AVIs while it is recording to the HDD. That's a bug because
it will play DVD format.
So get a spare DVD player like the Philips DVP5960 to play AVIs when
you are recording. It is on sale thru tomorrow at Circuit City for $60
after rebate, and the 3-year extended warranty for $20. The coverage
is in-store drop off and includes free maintenance cleaning once per
year. It's too good a deal to pass up, especially when you realize
they put crap in these cheap DVD units.

The rebate is only good thru Oct 21, which is Saturday.

The 5960 has a USB port so you can hook up an external drive, either a
flash disk or an external hard drive. However the USB port is 1.1 not
2.0 and the display is rather primitive, so I am told. Nevertheless,
contrary to the manual you can play AVIs thru it.
If you are using a composite TV signal, then get an A-B box (RCA
2-button unit in the WalMart online catalog) to switch the two units.
There are forums for the 5960:
