I think Sony IS hoping to generate sales of BR movies and players by
giving away the free movie. Even at $500, the PS3 will be the cheapest
Blu-Ray player on the market for at least the next 6 months. I think
Sony is hoping to generate interest in Blu-Ray via PS3 owners doing
in-home demos for their friends, as well as maybe buying a few additional
Blu-Ray movies for themselves.
Of course, I don't really know of anyone who's planning on doing anything
with their PS3 this year other than put it on ebay for roughly 100% profit.
