I was talking about generating a restricted set of teletext pages *locally*
at the decoder, rather than broadcasting all telextext pages. Specifically:

1. Generate a page 888 with the subtitles for the programme, using the
subtitles which are already transmitted and which can be overlaid onto the
programme. Suitable VCRs (such as my Panasonic one) can then record those
subtitles as closed captions and, during playback, the viewer can choose to
diaply them or not.

2. Generate whichever page it is which gives the title of the current
programme, using the "now/next" information, so that suitable VCRs with a
tape library feature can record that programme title in its list of tape
contents rather than just "BBC1 28 Oct 2006 21:00".

Also, they could transmit PDC information in such a way that the set top box
can generate whatever signal a PDC-enabled VCR uses to determine exactly
when to turn on and off with a late-running programme.

Here wer have three examples of technological advances that were developed
to improve the functionality of analogue VCRs, where no effort was made to
continue that proven functionality with digital broadcasts.
