Perhaps not, if it's implemented as poorly as you claim. (I had
assumed that the above functionality was included.)
I wonder if any of the DVHS VCRs are capable of controlling TVs via an
external IR emitter.

That's precisely what I had in mind. Yes, it is basically the same
idea, with the main difference being that personal computers are far
more popular than DVHS VCRs.

480p is listed not merely as a compatible input format, but as a
"display format."
I telephoned Samsung, and the CSR assured me that 480p content
inputted via the component connections is displayed as 480p. I
realize that CSRs sometimes don't know what the hell they're talking
about, but this guy seemed knowledgeable.
