Yeah. I know. I only wrote the safety screen bit for anyone who is
concerned about shattered glass. I don't use safety screens in any of
my open face fixtures, except for a couple of Omni's where the bulb is
really exposed because I don't use barn door on the them. They have
permanently attached speed rings instead.
The original poster could use 1/8 to 1/4 inch mesh hardware cloth
(it's steel wire, not fabric) if it is available. It won't knock the
light down much at all.
