Generally the industry masters 1.85:1 films to completely fill the
16:9 (1.77:1) screen by going full height and cropping a little off
the edges instead.
However (and perhaps surprisingly) most flat panel displays still
overscan the image, just the same as an old CRT.

The monitor on the right is a Vutrix broadcast LCD, showing the full
image of the BBC testcard. On the left is a Sony Bravia S-series LCD,
showing image cutoff. Note that the Bravia is in its *minimum*
overscan mode - you can actually set it to cut off more than this
should you so wish!
