Yep. It's defective, to the point that they deliberately scratch the
inner tracks of the DVD (you should notice a little loop pressed into
the first 1mm of the disk). This is what causes many DVD drives to just
barf out the disk or not see any content at all. There are also then
multiple faults in the DVD coding to confuse DVD-ROM drives.

Being able to just play a DVD in a PC or games console is a reasonable
request. Very few PC DVD drives will manage it, even with current
versions of AnyDVD (and why should I use 3rd party software just to
legitimately watch a DVD on my laptop?).

I've returned my copy as defective, though I'm covered by the distance
selling regulations anyway. Also amazon don't mention ripguard on their
listing for it, which is especially irritating - I would never have
purchased it in the first place had I known.

I tend to think this sort of hooky protection should be legislated
against. It's one thing protecting content, but entirely another when
it impinges on perfectly fair use of a DVD.
