Rather annoying back in 1995 when I registered my first domain, I let
our family name go. I wished I hadn't now. I'm monitering if the co.uk
or com ever gets released - but doubt it will.

As Colin pointed out, there is a way, which will cost you. You also
need to appreciate the domain may have been left by accident and you
may have competition for it after the "limbo" period. So it may be a
small premium to pay - but worth it it you seriously want it.
