Re: MP3 Player - Engineered Obsolescence?

I re-opened the player last night and using my trusty Dremel, carefully
removed the small defective battery.

My plan was to remove the battery and solder wires from the (+) and (-)
on the PCB to the main battery terminals. This was to prevent any risk
of leaking / explosion of the faulty button cell that could occur by
running it in parallel with the main battery.

Surprisingly, the player worked fine after successfully removing the
faulty cell, (but before rewiring it to the main battery) !

I don't now what the purpose of that battery was, but now that it's
gone, the player works fine and all the settings are remembered, even
after removing the main battery.

There's nothing written or etched on the faulty cell, so I don't no if
it's lithium, nicd, NiMH or alkaline. It's about a quarter inch in
diameter by 1/16" thick.
