Considering the source material a simple way to do it is to just copy the  
VOB files to your computer and open them in a mpeg editor like Womble or  
VideRedo, you can then edit if necessary and export your handiwork as a  
mpeg2 or mpeg1 file etc. 
You can in many cases and considering your source is home made and not a  
commercial DVD, you can simply rename the file suffix from VOB to MPG.
