The zip drives were notoriously prone to defects. In fact, I seem to
remember a class action lawsuit on the issue. The Superdisks were
actually quite reliable. We bought a lot of them and they worked, very
well. But they never caught on. That was at least partly due to the
fact that Zip was marketted much more cleverly. It was being pushed at
you everwhere, in spite of its vast deficiencies. I'm quite sure that
stores were given incentives to push it on users. If a naive buyer
asked for a computer, they were always offered a zip drive, never a
Superdisk. Had to be more profitable or something.

The format war was, I believe, why almost everyone skipped both and went
straight to CD's, as the archive medium of choice. In spite of that
rather explicit lesson, we appear headed for a format war again. Even
worse, both companies are cooperating with new anti-piracy measures. I
wish someone would sue them for antitrust violations. But as you haul
these technology sluts into court, you'll notice that the "police" are
all pimps.
