We should not forget that the Sony PS3 will be on sale before Christmass
in the US, for say 490$, and will play the Blue-Ray format (and have games
to boot).
It has HDMI output I think.
So with Blue-Ray burners for 800$ available now, and 490$ Blue-Ray players
with game feature coming before the end of this year, there is a strong
case for Blue Ray.
