Since this is an international newsgroup, it should be explained for the
benefit of readers from other countries that "a Freeview box" is what
they call DVB-T [1] set-top boxes in the UK. (In the UK, the free-to-air
digital tv channels, which are broadcast using the DVB-T standard, have
been consolidated under a single brand and terrestrial operator called
"Freeview" [1].)

Does the set-top box only have one SCART socket itself? If it has two of
them, you could just as well daisy-chain the DVD player through the
set-top box instead of the other way around.

You might also want to check if the DVD remote has a "monitor" button
(or a similar functionality of some sort) that would punch through the
signal from the secondary SCART socket even if the player is powered on.

If all that fails, there are remote-controlled SCART switchboxes.

Then again, why can't she just switch off the DVD player when she's
watching television?
