AFAIK there is nothing that a "reset" would accomplish towards the end of
restoring CD playback on a unit that is showing signs of mechanical malfunction.

>Is it possible to reset it without calling Lite-On customer support?

As I've already explained, your symptoms suggest a mechanical malfunction
rather than a software issue. A "reset" will not help. A cleaning or repair
might.

The preferred method is to take the drive apart, inspect the rails for
dirt or gunk, and clean the lens under direct vision. If that is not
possible, a cleaning disc might be the only alternative but it is not as
safe.

CD and DVD reading (and writing) take place at different optical wavelengths
and require the lens to focus at different depths below the media surface.
Mechanical malfunctions can affect CD, DVD, or both depending on the nature
of the problem.
