 Hmm. Why do you say that? My GSpot (v2.52 Beta 01, which is probably not
 even the latest version) appears to detect MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files fine.
 
 You could also try Teco Bitrate Viewer. It displays lots of information
 about MPEG files (including whether they're MPEG-1 or MPEG-2) in its
 info box:
