AIUI all dvd players/recorders *must* have region coding as a
condition of use of the firmware. The trick is to buy a device where
the manufacturer makes it easy for the buyer to take control of the
settings.
Not all sales staff are aware of such details. Even those buyers
aware can be fooled by purchasing something with a similar model
number to one with region code overide facility. Happened to me twice
a couple of years ago when I misread the model number on a Toshiba and
a DVD R/W for my PC. Colin Wilson of this group kindly helped me out
over the latter while I gave the Tosh away as a gift and bought a
second hand Philips in its place. I finally bought a cheap region free
capable from Amazon which does everything I want and had all the
instructions for making it region free on the Amazon site.
