**Hi Stan. I have a cheaper JVC, an HR-A592U. It also has the curious
habit of losing the on-screen menu for a variety of reasons. I usually
just get a blank blue screen. For me, at least, unplugging it has
brought the menu back. If the menu doesn't come back after a quick
unplugging, let it go overnight. Yes, it'll probably lose its settings
but it's worth a shot if you haven't done it already.

This is also an odd quirk: I stopped the recording one day but it
doesn't remove the timed recording from the menu. The next day, there
was the blue screen again. Now, I always make sure that if I cancel a
recording that I remove the times from the menu. It may or may not be
related, but that's just a bit of weirdness that I noticed and it
seems to have helped.

Meanwhile my Panasonic unit from 1997 is still going strong. :)
