You know, if I were a young baseball player right now, and a good
hitter, I would be leading a campaign to get rid of steroids in
baseball. I would be asking for very serious extensive testing by
independent labs, random sampling, and so on, because I would know that
if I had a great career, nobody would believe it, just as nobody is ever
going to believe that Barry Bonds is a better hitter than Babe Ruth. If
someone breaks Joe Dimaggio's record for consecutive games in which he
got at least one hit next year-- who cares? They probably cheated.
The influence of steroids is corrosive on the game. Some owners
probably thought the race to beat the home-run record was good for the
game-- but the damage done by the revelations about cheating is
long-term and serious. Nobody will ever get all that excited about any
future records-- unless Baseball can convince most fans that players
don't cheat.
So in the future, almost any good vocal performance will result in the
audience going, ho - hum. You say to your friend, wow, she was great.
Your friend says, don't be a rube-- it was all pre-recorded. They all
do it nowadays. If I had her technology and professional staff, I would
sound great too.
It's in the long-term interest of most performers that people generally
believe, unless told otherwise, that they are actually hearing a live
peformance.
