Martin, you're really doing this the hard way :-)
Put both events next to each other on the timeline and then trim the in/out
points accordingly.
If you have ripple edit enabled (icon is on the toolbar), it'll
automatically eliminate the gap.
Be very careful with this tool as it has 3 different settings and, if not
used properly, can really mess you up down the timeline where you can't
always see what's happening..
Another keyboard shortcut, after you have them roughly in place, is to hold
Ctrl+Alt as you slide the edit point. You can position the cursor anywhere
over the transition point (like an X) to drag. You'll also see the preview
window change to a split screen display to see the edit points. HTH.
BTW, an excellent resource for your mate is a collection of PDFs on Edward
Troxel's site at http://tinyurl.com/yase4v
I highly recommend grabbing all of them as they're full of useful everyday
tips for both Vegas and DVD Architect.
There's also some excerpts from the Sony Vegas 5 training series (still
mostly relevant even with Vegas 6) online at http://tinyurl.com/jtt6w
